Our latest 'Deal of the week' is DMG Media Ltd’s £70m acquisition of New Scientist Ltd.
Who they are
DMG Media is the holding Company for the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Metro and the i newspaper and New Scientist Ltd, founded in 1956, is a science magazine and website. They also have their own podcast and YouTube channel.
What we liked about the deal
This is DMG's second acquisition in the past two years after they acquired the i newspaper in 2019. The acquisition of New Scientist gives DMG a 29% market share of the newspaper sector.
The acquisition of New Scientist will expand DMGs digital offering and increase their subscription revenues as 75% of New Scientist’s revenue comes from subscriptions.
There is a significant level of consolidation in the publishing sector as newspapers and magazines look for synergies in their printing operations and adapt to the digitalisation of the media.
