ARRESTING WORDS: Pauline Clare speaks to Business Partnership
August 2007

Pauline Clare, the first women Chief Constable in the country and now a leading coach, is the latest guest speaker at the Business Partnership Lecture series.

Mrs Clare — who in 35 years with the police worked in operational uniform policing in every rank — will talk about her career and the challenges she has faced at the Bolton Ramada Hotel, Blackrod on Thursday September 20th (6.30pm).

The 2007 Business Partnership series, being held in association with accountants Hurst, Bridge Insurance Brokers and the Northwest Regional Development Agency, features influential and successful figures from the North West’s business community and offers a fascinating insight into what makes the region’s leading businesses so successful.

Whilst Chief Constable of Lancashire, Mrs Clare was responsible for the direction and control of the force and her main achievement was changing the culture of the organisation from a centrally controlled traditional force to a devolved empowered service.

Since completing her contract with the Police Service in 2002, Mrs Clare has started a new career in coaching and has completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Executive Coaching and a Certificate in Life Coaching.  She is qualified to give 360o feedback, is accredited in the use of the Transformation Leadership Questionnaire and is qualified to train others in coaching skills. She is a member of the European Coaching and Mentoring Council and is regularly supervised in her coaching practice.

In October 1993, she was chosen as ‘Lancashire Woman of the Year’ and in May 1995 received the ‘North West Woman of Achievement Award’.  In December 1994 she received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Central Lancashire.  On the 28th September 1995 Mrs Clare was invested with The Order of St John in the Grade of Serving Sister and in July 2004 was appointed as Commander of St John for Lancashire. She was Honorary Colonel of the Lancashire Army Cadet Force (Queen’s Lancashire Regiment), and is a Vice President of the Lancashire Association of Clubs for Young People.

In June 1996 she was awarded the Q.P.M. (Queen’s Police Medal) and in December 1998 was made a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Lancashire.  In April 1999, she was presented with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the Open University and in June 2002 she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.  She currently serves on the North West Board of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

“Pauline Clare has been successful in not one but two careers and is an expert on how organisations cope with change,” says Business Partnership’s Tricia Calway. “We are delighted to have her as our guest and I am sure her lecture will offer our audience some useful insights that they’ll be able to apply to their own businesses.”
